How the converter writes a number

Each result is read from the largest place-value group to the smallest. Thousands are written before hundreds, tens, and ones. Zero digits that do not add a value are skipped.

American English style

The results follow common American English usage. For example, 1239 is written as one thousand two hundred thirty-nine. Compound values such as thirty-nine use a hyphen, and “and” is normally omitted inside whole numbers.

Why “in words” stays plural for 1

“In words” is a fixed English expression meaning “written with letters instead of digits.” For that reason, the correct phrase is 1 in words, even though its answer is the single word one.
